Trump

For some reason, I have been hesitate to get the new Trump book. The guy is successful and I am sure he has a lot of great advice to impart, but I just wasn’t sure it was going get into the book.

Trolling the blogsphere, it seems people are mostly giving it positive ratings. Here is a sampling:

  • The Entrepreneur’s Life – Quote: Donald Trump on Entrepreneurship
  • Jeremy @ Ensight.org – Trump’s Book
  • Crossroads Dispatches – Trump, Cuban & Why the Best Strategy and Tactics Aren’t Enough, Part II
  • Small Business Blog – Trump: the Art of the (book) deal
  • Intangible Tangents – Delirium Tremens
  • ValueManagementPartners.com – How To Get Rich

April Jack Covert Selects

As I said in my review

“Im sure Death by Meeting will enjoy long-term success, especially since Patrick Lencioni is so good at writing fables; they stick in your brain and you end up learning a lot of useful information.”

I also reviewed a book called Unstuck. As I said

“Some people have had issues with business books not being prescriptive enough. This is the perfect book for them. I have a feeling this will be a book that will be around a long time because it deals with a universal problem, being stuck, brilliantly.”

Click on the link to read the complete review. Both books are currently available.

BTW, let me know if you would like to get the free JCS reviews. I do two to five each month. The May list is currently at five books and if I ever finish Alaxander Hamilton there will be six books reviewed. We email the JCS’s the second week of the month.

Signed business books

Lawrence Block has been writing books forever. He has won everything a mystery writer can win. Edgar’s et.all. His Matt Scudder books are some of the best noir books written since Chandler and Hammett. He has written a fun piece about book touring I want to share.

How does this relate to business books? I don’t know. I just like to read Lawrence Block…Also I don’t think an autographed business book really has any value in the market place.

That made me remember the last “business book” event I was involved in. The retail chain I am connected with had Jack Welch for a signing at one of their stores for the really not very good Jack book and they had 700 people attend. That was the good news, the bad news was that GE Medical Systems is located 20 miles away and I would have expected more people. Still 700 people stood in line for quite awhile to chat with Jack. I must admit, Jack Welch was a real trooper to have his picture taken with anyone with a camera and was incredibly personably with everybody. I think he was the last business superstar to tour.

Next HUGE Historical Bio

In the vein of John Adams and Titan, Ron Chernow has just published Alexander Hamilton.
As America’s first treasury secretary, Hamilton forged America’s tax and budget systems, Custom Service, Coast Guard and the central bank.
After spending a rainy weekend reading the book, it is as good as Titan. Trust me on this one, this is a great read and will win some serious awards next year.

May 4–I finished the book and it is another classic by Ron Chernow. I will be writing a Jack Covert Selects on the book.

Strategy+Business' Best Business Books of 2003

I know it is almost May and it might be a little late to talk about the best of 2003. Think of it as a way to check and see if you missed anything.

Our first list comes from strategy+business via NPR. You can find the list with extensive reviews at the magazine’s site. I liked the NPR site because you can listen to the NPR segment where past-host Bob Edwards interviews editor-in-chief Randall Rothenberg. Their list is divided into a number of subject headings. You can find the complete list below the fold.

John Byrne's Reviews

I really enjoy the book reviews by Fast Company’s John Byrne. You’ll see him posting them from time to time on the FC Now blog. The first recommendation I came across was Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott. I read the book and thought it was outstanding.

Last week, Byrne posted two entries (Part I and Part II) on McKinsey’s Marvin Bower : Vision, Leadership and the Creation of Management Consulting by Elizabeth Haas Edersheim.

As he posts others, I’ll point you to them.

Searching for Books

Angie McKaig has some problems with the Amazon search engine. Angie contends that while Amazon’s Search in Book has added functionality, but makes the results less relevant.

Our search engine is far from perfect. We working to improve it. Angie’s comments remind me that we need to make it easy for people to find what they are looking for. Anything outside that clouds that objective.
