Radical Careering: 100 Truths to Jumpstart Your Job, Your Career, and Your Life by Sally Hogshead, Gotham Books, 192 Pages, $15.00 Paperback, September 2005, ISBN 1592401503

People are often amazed when I tell them I have never created a resume to get a job. Most of this is due to luck, but part of it, is also due to seizing opportunities.

Sally Hogshead wrote an amazing book about finding the passion and seizing opportunities in your career. The first thing that will strike you about the book is its design. It is printed in full color with punchy headlines and great photographs. This is a rare delight in the business book world. It makes the book stand out and call to be read.

Second, you will notice the message. It reminds me of Fast Company in its prime. Sally forces you to think about what you are doing (or not doing). She gives you 100 Radical Truths ranging from “Worry Less, Do More” to “Be Someones Hero”. After reading Radical Careering, you cannot help but question how you are spending your 9 to 5s. You will feel driven to make your career (and your life) what you want it to be.

As you settle into the book, you will find she has great material to support her points. Sally hired a research firm to conduct interviews with 1,000 people from around the country. The firm focused on Gen Xers and asked questions like, “Which is most important in determining success: Natural talent or hard work?” 92% went with hard work. You will also find addresses for mini-websites scattered throughout the book. With names like www.ramen-noodles-again.com and www.outta-here.com, how can you pass them up?

It is simple. Buy this book, get a shot in the arm, and get back to the life you enjoy living.
