Our Blog – Accredited Online

Jack copied me on his response to a message he received recently, writing “For an email out of the blue, this is a good one.” The message came from Adrienne Carlson, who runs the Accredited Online PHD University blog. She had written Jack to let him know that she included us in her recent post, 100 Awesome Blogs for Every Kind of Book Lover.

It’s a great list, with suggestions in a wide variety of genres—from business to comic books, from sites where you can sell your books to podcasts. If you have even a fleeting interest in books, you will want to check the list to see if you’re missing anything. I know my RSS list grew after just a cursory glance, and will likely grow even more when I find the time to dig in deeper.

We’d like to thank Adrienne Carlson for including us. It’s humbling and flattering to be put in such company.

New Feature: Books To Watch

Filed under: Lists,The Company — Todd Sattersten @ 3:09 pm

We have added a new feature to the site called “Books To Watch.”

These are a set of lists categorized by month of books we think are cool. We see so many books that we want to tell you about but often run out of time getting to them all. This is our solution.

We are going to add them to the front page of the site next week, but for now, here are the links for the next four months worth of lists.

My Favorite Business Book by You

Earlier this year, we released The 100 Best Business Books of All Time.

In making such a bold statement, we received both congratulatory notes and outright condemnation of our selections. As you can imagine, hard decisions had to be made. There was simply no way around the fact that there were going to be deserving books and authors left out.

We launched My Favorite Business Book in March of 2009 to remedy that numerical constraint and open the selection process to more people than just two booksellers from Milwaukee. The site allows anyone to share the story of their favorite book and make the case for why others should read it.

This document is just a sampling of the stories that readers have shared with us. With enough participation, we believe we can build a resource that will provide a book recommendation for most any problem, a peer-generated bibliography of the best and most useful business resources bound in covers.

The process only takes a few minutes to complete. If you’d like to participate, or simply read more stories, head on over to myfavoritebizbook.com.

New Look For 800-CEO-READ

Filed under: The Company — Todd Sattersten @ 12:08 pm

If you have seen any of our print materials over the last few years, you’ll recognize our new look.

There are a number of things we are trying to do with the new site:

  • Make more apparent all the things we do.
  • Provide a better book search
  • Build on more flexible systems like Ruby on Rails and WordPress.
  • Make it prettier.

Use this post as a place to leave comments on things that aren’t working. We are still tweaking some things and you will probably see more changes over the next several days.

Thanks and we hope you enjoy!

The 100 Best Update

It has been three weeks since The 100 Best Business Books of All Time launched and I just wanted to write you a note and thank you for all of your support.

Twitter has been a-flitter with tweets: http://tinyurl.com/cm9pvp

There are 31,000 hits in Google now with most of them written by all of you: http://tinyurl.com/bnuaxz

The book has been covered by BusinessWeek, NPR Marketplace, and CNBC while we have written pieces for Harvard Business Review and Fortune. We have the whole list here: http://100bestbiz.com/media/

We are going to keep posting things about The 100 Best from time to time, but if you would to keep getting formal updates about The 100 Best, join our mailing list (under the book cover) at http://100bestbiz.com/

But I have one request before I go.

If you have purchased a copy, find three people to share The 100 Best with. Help us find an even better audience for the book.

If you have not purchased the book, Jack and I hope you will. We wrote The 100 Best so people could spend less time figuring out what to read and more time actually reading.

Here are some of the wonderful places you can buy The 100 Best: http://100bestbiz.com/the-100-best-store/

Thanks again for all of our support for 800-CEO-READ as well as The 100 Best,

Todd Sattersten

President

800-CEO-READ

PS In addition to the 100 best books, our book recommends 295 other books that are worth checking out. Typo is one of those books and its publisher Soft Skull Press is offering a free pdf download for the next seven days. Enjoy!

The Downturn Hits 800-CEO-READ

Filed under: The Company — Todd Sattersten @ 1:51 pm

Last Wednesday, a little less than one month into my new job, I had to tell seven people they could no longer work here.

The numbers in the publishing industry have been pointed down for a number of months. The retail side of our business, Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, announced they were closing last month. And just last week, Borders announced another layoff.

For us, the impact of the current economic conditions has been swift and dramatic. We had to scale our business back to match the environment we are in and will likely be in for the next couple of years (yes, I said years).

I mention it here for a couple reasons. First, we have always been open about our company, how we run our business, and how we view the world. Sharing this news with all of you gives you another data point about the economy as a whole.

Second, some of the writers who have written for our blog are among those who have been let go. Kate and Rebecca are among those in the process of figuring out what is next.

Those of us left are also in the process of figuring out what is next.

Just a quick note to let you know we’re all back in town, ready for a new season of business books. Our launch party in NYC was a great success (thanks to all who joined us!), and we are looking forward to Jack and Todd’s book coming out next week.
Here we all are. What a great looking bunch!

On Monday night, 800-CEO-READ will be hosting a launch party for The 100 Best Business Books of All Time and celebrating the winners of the 800-CEO-READ Business Book Awards

The event is being held in Midtown in New York City.

And we have space for a few more people.

Drop me a note (todd#at#800ceoread&dot&com) if you would like to attend and I will send along the details.

BTW – the office of 800-CEO-READ will be closed on Monday and Tuesday as the entire staff will be in New York for the event (yeah, we think that is pretty cool too).
